Highlights:
The seed to start a state level alliance was sown during a national level ‘Parliament Gherao’ campaign that involved NGOs across the country get together to demand for equal education for all children. NGOs from AP realized the urgent need to critically and closely examine the situation in the state and take action to change it.
A consultation involving NGOs, distinguished persons and intellectuals, Students and Teachers organizations, media representatives led to the conclusion that the need of the hour is to make education more inclusive by pressurizing the governments to recognize their constitutional and moral responsibility in providing free and quality education to all the children irrespective of caste, creed, sex, race, language and region.
Several prominent persons in the field of education like Prof. Kodandaram, Nageswer (MLC) Khasim and Narasimha Reddy were a part of the consultation.
This paved way for a state level campaign on Common school system called the AP SamanaVidyaSadhanaSamithi.
500 members across 19 districts pledged to be a part of the Campaign. Thus began an initiative that would soon spread across A.P gathering momentum to demand for accessible education for all children.
IMPACT –
- AP SamanaVidyaSadhanaSamithi, a state wide campaign demanding common school system was initiated.
- A paper titled “Education Movement in A.P. ‘ by M. Madhu was released. This paper critically analyzed the existing situations of schools in A.P. and the urgent need to demand for a common school system.
- A state level consultation was organized which passed a resolution to focus on 3 key demands which were
- 10% and 30% budgetary allocation by the Central and State governments respectively for education,
- Stoppage of closure of government and aided schools, and
- Provision for scientific, secular and democratic education
- Prof. K. Nageswar, Sri. BojjaTarakam, Prof. Kodandaram, Sri. Narasimha Reddy, Sri. Khasim and Sr. M. Madhu were elected as the advisory members
